mayor's art scholarship

The artists, educators, and teaching artists that live and work in Houston undergird the cultural vitality and unique identities that make our city one of the most diverse in the United States. The arts capture and express the essence of our many communities. What's more, they open up exciting educational pathways by helping us think creatively about the present in ways that prepare us for the future. The Mayor's Art Scholarship fosters and recognizes excellence in student visual art that reflects features of life in Houston-area neighborhoods. 


Juniors and seniors enrolled in public, charter, or private schools in the Houston area (ESC Region 4 and additional districts) are encouraged to submit original pieces of visual art that reflect the competition's theme: Neighborhood and Identity. The three winners from each grade level cohort will receive scholarship prizes that may be used at any non-profit university or college in the United States in which they enroll.


Fall 2023 Competition Timeline

September 29th – Deadline for digital submissions


October 8th – Finalists are notified and informed of how to drop off their artwork


October 16th – Finalists’ artwork is displayed in City Hall


October 24th – Finalists are notified of whether or not they have been awarded a scholarship prize


October 30th – Awards ceremony and reception

The Mayor's Art Scholarship competition is funded by the City of Houston through the Greater Houston Community Foundation. Funding is contingent on available resources through the GHCF Fund.
