Artistic creation has allowed people to find expression and communication since beginning of human history. Ancient cultures have used pottery to tell a story. This course will be an opportunity to work with clay as an art medium. Each participant will become familiar with the basic methods of construction and sculptural techniques. Our focus will be to learn the history of clay and learn hand building techniques like pinch, coil and slabs and how to use this medium to create a pot that tells a story. Pottery provides a new rich language to give voice to youth’s inner self through sculptural form allowing them to experiment with the physically touch of clay and discover new avenues of communication to connect with their creative spirit. During this workshop or residency, participants will take some time to discuss color. What do colors awaken in ourselves? What feelings do we experience when we see different tones of color? Using this knowledge of the discussion, participants will use color to express how they feel in the moment, creating an abstract painting on a canvas. Participants will have the opportunity to learn about abstract art, color theory. primary colors, how to create secondary colors, and how to apply learned knowledge in artwork. The intention of this workshop is to create a safe space for participants to learn about the origins of art and to honor the native tribes that lived or traveled through this land before us. Participants will explore the origin of Native American Lakota people and Native tribes from Mexico, the Wixarika people and their cosmovision of the world. Participants will create a weaving piece, Ojo de Dios (origin from Mexico) and Dreamcatchers (which originates from The Lakota Nation from United States). This is a project that has changed countless lives as Sarah has worked with therapists, teens in recovery, children of all ages, homeless citizens, senior citizens, the City of Houston, and many more groups. She can create a special workshop or series of art classes inspired by that project for your group that will help people (children or adults) connect to themselves through creativity and new ways of thinking. 2+ Sessions, Same Day $95 per 45-min. session; $115 per 60-min. session Per-Session Fee $115 per 45-min. session; $125 per 60-min. session Participant Limit 20 Grade Levels 2-12 Labyrinths for Peace WORKSHOP & RESIDENCY Sarah Gish Labyrinths are an ancient design that kids or adults will get to explore as a tool for meditation, creativity, and calming down. Artist and certified labyrinth facilitator Sarah Gish will lead participants as they either walk a 20’ x 20’ portable labyrinth or use individual finger labyrinths. If desired and there is time, the kids can then create their own finger labyrinth or other art inspired by labyrinths to take home. This program fulfills TEKS fine arts requirements by using creativity to nurture and develop the whole child and by connecting visual art to everyday life and personal stories. Immerse yourself in the world of mandalas with Cindy, explore different weaving techniques to create them and benefit from this psycho-emotional process. Creating mandalas allows participants to express emotions through colors, shapes, and the combinations they employ. This process opens the channels of intuition, perception and active meditation. This energy is expressed through colors, radiant circular magic connecting us with our being. Participants will create a weaving piece (Ojo de Dios) following the ancient technique. Projects are customized for each working group, their focus and grade level will be tailored to the needs of the group. Meditation and healing music is part of our class. Each participant will create their own project, decorate and harmonize spaces, wall art decoration, mobiles, string art mandalas, dreamcatcher, woven and hand-painted tapestries. In this style of healing art our emotions and feelings will be reflected in our design. Each participant is left with a physical representation of themselves. Meditation techniques and healing music are part of our class. Un artista docente también elogió el programa y dijo: "[el programa] permitió a los artistas jóvenes participar en todo el proceso de planificación y ejecución de una comisión a gran escala. Esta experiencia del mundo real reflejó la realidad de la planificación, preparación, ejecución y coordinación de las agencias que existen en el trabajo post-académico. Sarah Gish Houston-based artist Sarah Gish has an art project, Ignite Your Life!, which she created to help everyone ignite their lives and to discover what makes their hearts sing. She wrote “12 Ways to Ignite Your Life Daily” and can use those as the basis for any project – the Ways are: trust, nourish, meditate, commune (with nature), listen, love, serve, forgive, thank, create, learn, laugh. She has an art car with the “12 Ways” on them and can incorporate that as well. Sarah has worked with therapists, teens in recovery, children of all ages, homeless citizens, senior citizens, the City of Houston, adults, and many more groups.
