Flamenco is an artistic expression that resulted from the combination of singing, dance, and guitar accompaniment, respectively called cante, baile and toque. Join professional Flamenco dancers and learn more about the beauty, strength, and variety that exists within the Flamenco dance and culture. Participants will gain a deeper appreciation of this art through a brief introduction to the origin and history of Flamenco, as well as an explanation of the performance elements that compose this dance. In this workshop you will learn not only the fundamentals of breakdance, but more importantly the fundamentals of how to feel comfortable using your body to learn anything physical! Balance, body control, coordination, flexibility, and self confidence is what this program will focus on. We want everyone leaving each class inspired and with a big smile!

Students are guided on a journey toward balance, mindfulness, and inner strength through the ancient healing arts of Tai Chi and Qi Gong. Rooted in Taoist philosophy, this afterschool program empowers children to develop both skill and character in a supportive, nurturing environment.

Movements are adapted to meet each child’s needs, allowing participants of all abilities to progress at their own pace. Through this mindful approach, students learn that growth is measured not by comparison, but by self-awareness and personal development. With every practice, they build confidence, focus, and a deepened sense of well-being. 

Capoeira is a unique fusion of acrobatics, dance, and music. Classes emphasize strength, coordination, agility, endurance, balance, and rhythm. The energy of the game, the rhythm, and speed are determined by the music, led by the Berimbau, an African string instrument. Participants will learn essential moves and strategies, as well as how to play the music and of course, practice all the skills together in the Roda!

Asé Martial Arts aims to help students learn self discipline while becoming physically stronger and having fun. Asé is a Yoruba term that means power or energy. Asé Martial Arts offers both residency programs and workshops for students. If desired, the program can culminate in a student performance for parents and community to observe students’ mastery and acquisition of skills. Asé Martial Arts is led by Baba Mosiah, who is a third degree black belt in Ichin Ru and Kupigana Ngumi Kusini styles of martial arts. He has a specialty in teaching children and over 20 years experience in martial arts training.

This multidisciplinary residency offers Aztec dance, drum and song. A 9-week residency offers students the chance to learn 2 dances and selected students will learn the drumming patterns and one Nahuatl (Aztec) song with a final performance for student body/parents. In a  15-week residency students will learn 4 dances and selected students will learn the drumming patterns for 2 songs in the Nahuatl (Aztec) language. Students will be guided with the circle of respect concept that also integrates racial tolerance, acceptance as all 4 colors of the medicine wheel will be explained as the template of the Native American medicine wheel. These four colors represent the four stages of life, the four original people of color of the earth as well as the four changes of season.

Minimum of 1 week residency 

This interdisciplinary residency takes students back to the root learning and sparks their inner creative fire. Students will be introduced to the four elements of the Earth—Wind, Fire, Earth, and Rain— and will explore parallels between the four elements of Hip-Hop—DJ, Rap, Graffiti, and Breakdance. Throughout the residency, students explore both ancient and modern customs and cultures through song, dance, storytelling, poetry, and visual arts, and discover strength, pride, and a sense of identity through their mutual connection to Mother Earth.

Minimum of 1 week residency 

In this cultural dance workshop, participants will journey through various parts of China by exploring authentic Chinese dance techniques. Learning the origin of these techniques will help participants better understand the customs and traditions of China’s various aboriginal groups. Participants will also experiment with Chinese dance props and view excerpts of Chinese dance.

Join Karen Garcia in this high energy workshop set to today's exciting pop songs to learn the basics of dance! Participants will learn rhythm and body awareness and the skills needed to improvise to any song!

MOVEment Matters is a dance-based residency or workshop series designed for K–12 students to explore movement as a form of expression, self-discovery, and community building.

Through technique, improvisation, choreography, and reflection, students build
confidence, body awareness, and collaboration skills—while having fun and getting active.

This curriculum is designed for children aged 5 to 14, focusing on the integration of mindfulness and movement to support emotional awareness, physical development, and creative self-expression. The curriculum is structured to allow in-depth exploration of each topic over four weeks, ensuring a thorough understanding before moving on.
 

Internationally acclaimed performer Rathna Kumar utilizes her 30 years of teaching experience to integrate Indian dance into school curricula. Participants learn new means of communication through the elaborate vocabulary of Indian dance, which uses hand gestures to tell stories. For hearing- or speech-impaired participants, the dances become an exciting new sign language, and for any class, TEKS elements can be incorporated to fit individual lesson plans in language arts, social studies, history, science, or math.

A hip-hop dance workshop with Isaac Barron is filled with fun and exciting movement. Students will learn combinations and be introduced to new movement vocabularies such as top rock, freezes, and more. Classes can be tailored to fit the youngest dancers up to more experienced levels, but, whether beginner or expert dancer, the goal is for students to enjoy dancing and find the spark that leads to positive change!

Through writing exercises participants in grades, 6 through 12 will use poetry and prose to express and idea, emotion, opinion or experience. The group will be guided to further express their ideas in movement, drawing from the imagery they created with words. This residency may be offered in as few as 6 sessions or as an ongoing program. Public performance options require a minimum of 12 sessions.

JAM dance is a highly energetic movement class for boys and girls who love to move. The classes will cover the basics of dance including foundations of movement through jazz and hip-hop dance. It will be a JAM packed class designed to inspire creativity, self expression and incorporate age appropriate current trends in social dancing. Suggested 8 sessions.

Join YAH Teaching Artists from Open Dance Project for a highly energetic dance program suitable for kids of all ages. Participants will learn to combine elements in dance, music, and theatre while expressing themselves
through creative movement. We will use the fundamentals of dance to focus on story-telling while building skills in self-awareness, social awareness,
relationship skills, and responsible decision making.

With content and themes that compliment students’ core curriculum subjects, Open Dance Project’s school shows and workshops move seamlessly in and out of dance, theatre, and music. In our performances, workshops and residencies, students learn to create, analyze and interpret original performance material based on content and themes pulled directly from their classroom work in English Language Arts, Math, Science and Social Studies.

​Students will enjoy a diverse selection of dance styles that range from contemporary to jazz and hip hop. This program may be offered as a single workshop or as a residency of up to 8 weeks.
