storytelling + spoken word

Below you'll find information about:

  • Workshops: Hands-on workshops bring together individual artists to encourage students to actively discover their own artistic potential. Ideal for after school, library, or community center programs. Most workshops are product based.

  • Residencies: Offer experiences implemented by a specialized teaching artist. Residencies are multiple, participatory workshops and require a minimum of 3 sequential sessions per student group, and can be expanded into semester-long projects. Residencies take place in partnership with the classroom teacher and either focus on arts-integration or the artistic process.

With movies, television and video games, children are accustomed to having special effects create scenes for them. Storytelling allows children the empowerment of creating scenes for themselves. This workshop will help students enhance their reading, writing and speaking, exploring imagination to find their own, personal voice. They will have fun learning techniques of body language, facial expression, gesture, articulation, voice fluctuation and timing to create powerful and entertaining characters. They will also gain an understanding of story structure while practicing valuable listening skills that, through perception and difference, help develop vocabulary, extending these essential lessons beyond the classroom.

Jasminne believes that “everyone has a story to tell” and if you don’t tell your own story someone else will do it for you and they’re going to get it wrong. For that reason, she wants to empower your students with the artistic tools and knowledge necessary to help them tell their own stories in creative ways. Using the power of language and performance strategies like improv exercises and collaborative storytelling, workshop participants will explore how writing. storytelling and performance can make a change in their own lives and in the world around them. Using culturally relevant writing prompts and mentor texts, award winning author and acclaimed performer Jasminne Mendez can create a customized workshop to help your students craft their personal experiences into poems, personal narratives, plays or performance pieces to share with the world so that we can all begin to feel a little more empathy and compassion towards each other. Workshops can be English/Spanish or both.
