social and emotional learning

The times we live in are unpredictable and sometimes violent, even within the school environs. Social, racial, gender, and other differences have become politicized and even many adults have trouble interacting positively with people who are different from themselves. Studies in neuroscience find strong links between cognition and emotion. How a student feels about learning greatly impacts his ability to progress in a subject. Other brain studies show that individuals under too much stress operate at a lower decision-making level than normal. Students need strategies for dealing with trauma, bullying, destructive feelings, and other negative experiences and fears. Social Emotional Learning (SEL) has been shown to provide those strategies.

Young Audiences of Houston and SEL

SEL is encouraged both within and outside the classroom setting. However, many classroom teachers are overburdened with teaching tasks and responsibilities and could benefit from SEL  themselves. YAH can help meet these needs through workshops, performances, and other experiences based on SEL.

Getting Started

The process for planning is simple.

1) You contact our program team members.

2) You describe your needs (educational, social, and artistic) and available schedule. You are able to select pre-set programs below or meet with us and we'll curate programs around specific learning objectives.

3) We prepare a budget and program proposal for you.

4) We schedule and coordinate Teaching Artist Calendar and handle all the paperwork.

5) We conduct on-going site visits and evaluations to ensure quality, collect attendance, and produce any required reports.

6) We create curriculum connection guides, aligning programs with educational standards and performance measures.

Scheduling: (713) 520-9264 | Email: scheduling@yahouston.org

YAH teaching artists are trained and utilize framework based on the competencies developed by CASEL:

  • Self-Awareness: The ability to identify one’s own emotions and their effect on behavior, and the ability to recognize one’s strengths and weaknesses.

  • Self-Management: The ability to regulate emotions and behaviors, manage stress and the ability to set and achieve goals.

  • Social Awareness: The ability to take the perspective of and empathize with others, including those from diverse backgrounds and cultures and to understand social and ethical norms.

  • Relationship Skills: The ability to establish healthy relationships, communicate clearly, listen and work well with others, and seek help when needed.

  • Responsible Decision Making: The ability to make constructive choices, and evaluate outcomes and consequences.

The Young Audiences of Houston Self Care Lab is a transformative Healing Arts program on campus where students are involved in creating and transforming a physical space into a haven for Social and Emotional Learning (SEL) programs. The Self Care Lab is an inclusive space where students and staff experience Healing Arts with YAH Teaching Artists through mediation, sensory activities, group discussion, self-exploration, writing and reflection, poetry, visual art, music, movement, and other restorative practices. Class goals are curated through a collaboration with campus support staff and YAH Programs Team. The Self Care Lab provides each campus with a long-term residency in the form of a dedicated physical space where students are either sent by referral or attend during or after school in collaboration with campus teachers and YAH Teaching Artists year-round. Workshops and Residencies are aligned with TEKS through YAH's SEL Curriculum. Curation of physical space is a separate cost.

Speaking Through the Arts

WORKSHOP & RESIDENCY

Gigi Fiori

Request.png

Join Gigi in speaking the universal language of art. This experience is based in the therapeutic benefits of creating art through exploration of multi/intermodal processes. The creative process promotes relief of stress, encourages creative thinking associated with problem solving, boosts self-esteem, activates our reward systems, and provides a sense of accomplishment. It allows people to find new ways to communicate and make connections, even between seemingly unrelated things. The best part is that there is no skillset required to participate, just a willingness to engage with the material. The goal of this workshop is to promote slowing down, mindfulness, and intentionality through two competencies of social emotional learning: self-awareness and self-management.

Dance Expressions allows the youngest participants to perfect gross and fine motor skills while incorporating basic movements of dance. Children will bend, jump, crawl, and everything in between to help them learn more about what their bodies can do. Imaginative play will allow them to experiment with decision-making on how to behave and increase interaction with their peers. The cognitive, social, emotional, and language development that occurs will build a strong foundation for stress management and social-emotional resilience. For this age, we recommend 45 minutes per session.
